Since I haven’t been ar ound very long, and because my memory sucks, the best moments I can offer are the groundswell of people helping me with my Jeep hunt.

From Rusty masquerading as me on Facebook to chase down an XJ, to boredalways generating dozens of leads for me to research, to Snuze risking his wife’s displeasure to look at and potentially buy one for me, to DS M_OR_DIE driving 9 hours to take me to and from an XJ in central Illinois, to brokenmostweeks setting the wheels in motion for me to buy a WJ... this community is fantastic.

And people didn’t mind me writing about it! Miracle upon miracle.

Oh, and all the wonderful planelopnik content. People generating high quality content about stuff I know nothing about.

I joined Oppo right after I started my current job, and I just hit my 7 year anniversary on Tuesday! Which means I also was not yet even engaged when I joined...I am now a married man and a father.

I think my favorite “moments” were the days when Oppo was really bustling. Posts every few minutes, a little riff raff with the FP...

Oppo is also the first place EVER on the internet where I looked a little deeper into myself. It’s easy to be a shallow commenter or huck hard edged opinions around from behind a keyboard. It’s much more difficult think how to be a “real” person on the internet. I want to be here, and I want others to want to be here, and want me here. A community like this only exists when we don’t allow it to turn into the FP comments. That takes personal effort from everyone to hear out a discussion that you could much more easily dismiss with a witty comment.

I have been through a bunch of vehicles since I joined as well. This is relevant because we all have probably shared each other’s car related joy more than people in our physical lives:

It was fun watching your Jeep journey, though it’s kind of ironic you’ve only owned it for a few days and Oppo is going down.

Maybe that was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Maybe the universe was trying to warn you this whole time that finding your new Jeep would undo the fabric of reality. Maybe we should’ve listened...

On second thought... nah. In fact, I’d dub your Jeep a physical manifestation of this lovely site, and the community that helped you find it (even though 99% of said community had nothing to do with it).

I don’t have a lot of pals who know what a Citroen 2CV is... or friends that know the French make cars (before I watched Top Gear, I didn’t know either). Hell, my friends didn’t even know the TSX came as a wagon, and one of the first people I met on here owns one (in much nicer condition cosmetically). So to all of them, I’m a total car expert and all the knowledge I have is completely alien to them...

But I don’t know jack sh*t. This place and the people in it taught me so much about cars, but did so without making me feel like an idiot (which I absolutely am). And that’s because everyone on here is a real person, not just some guy sitting in front of a forum all day answering questions like he/she is some sort of know it all mechanic.

I hope we find a different place to share knowledge on many things, but until we do, I have some posts to archive.

I doubt I’ll ever own a van. There’s just too much out there. I did briefly (dream all the time) of chopping a Ford Transit Connect into a mini-truck after seeing it done on Facebook. But I like the IDEA of vans.

One fond one I remember is McMike’s washing and folding of a towel, then putting it back on the road.

He lived in some sort of gated community, and someone had dropped a towel on the road.  Everyone in the community must have seen it, so he finally picked up, brought it home, washed it (even with fabric softener), then folded it up nice and put it back where he found it.

I made a post many months ago about a photo I found of an obscure steam car built out of a carriage body on two bicycle frames. A bunch of us all joined together to scour the internet for any pieces of information we could find on this forgotten piece of automotive history, and it honestly surprised me how much we were able to find. When previously I couldn’t find any articles or documentation on this thing, all of a sudden we had scraped together enough information to piece together some of the story. In that moment, we were true automotive archeologists, and it was wonderful. If there’s one post I need to be sure to save, it’s that one, because nowhere else on the internet can you find a more complete history of that car.

My memory has slowed failed me unfortunately and I haven't been on Oppo in years, but I remember the oppo tinychat rooms. I met Aaron Brown and Fred Smith on Oppo and they're now 2 of my closest friends and we have had a few irl tinychat reunions.

Yeah, the 2.2 is peppy. But not powerful. I’ve considered some pretty ridiculous things for it, but if, and only if either it’s engine or transmission completely fails. And even then... I can still buy a new ATK 2.2L block and new transmission.... I could try and replicate a GLH 2.2 engine. Turbo’d small truck would be hilarious. On the EXTREME ends I’ve considered 4WD/ADW with a HEMI or a diesel engine. Both would require me doing some pretty drastic front end structural work. But I’ve thought about it. First my Eagle needs to be dependable. Which it is not, at all right now.

Favorite parts of opp? Probably some of the craigslist searching “contests. ” Those were always fun. Or searching for the most interesting cars in a randomly chosen town. Everything Oppo is great.
